Our forests are all on publicly owned Crown land. As such one of the most important obligations within our operating licenses is the requirement to reforest all areas that we harvest. We have the choice to either rely on natural reforestation or take a more pro-active approach and conduct our own tree planting.
We have elected to plant all of our harvested sites with tree species suitable for the sites from seed collected within our forests. Currently we have approximately 5 million seeds collected for future use.
Tree planting occurs in May and June of each year immediately after snowmelt.
Our planting program started in 2007 during which we planted 156,000 seedlings. Our planting program has grown to 268,000 in 2008 and 418,000 in 2009.
