Environmental Management SystemWFN is currently developing an Environmental Management System (EMS) that meets the ISO 14001 International Standard for management systems. The EMS will be applied to all of our forestry operations.
The EMS will be a structured protocol to ensure that our forestry activities do not cause undue harm to the environment. The EMS will rely on the use of standard operating procedures to implement WFN’s environmental policy.
We anticipate that our EMS will be in place in 2011.
Forest CertificationIn recent years there has been an increasing demand worldwide for assurances that forests are sustainably managed forests. This has led to the development of a number of certification systems to provide assurance to consumers that forest products have been produced using environmentally and socially responsible forest practices.
As an important step towards certification, in 2010 Westbank First Nation became a partner to the Sustainable Forest Management Plan (SFMP) for the Okanagan. The SFMP was developed on the basis of the requirements of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Sustainable Forest Management Standard (CAN/CSA Z809). The Okanagan SFMP includes the Crown land forest operations of BC Timber Sales, Gorman Bros. Lumber Ltd, Tolko Industries and Westbank First Nation.
